The Van Der Westhuizen's at Crossroads pt 3

Wessie and Brilliant

The Importance of reading The Bible

It’s important for us to read the Bible. We learn about God and see how He works. The Bible is full of men who tell their thoughts on the Bible.

Joshua 23:1 – 6
Follow the Law of Moses (the Pentateuch) which is the first 5 books of the Bible. These books are Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy. They had 5 books to read and we have 66 books to read and learn from.

Nehemiah 8:1 – 3 “...all the men assembled as one man in the square before the Water Gate. They told Ezra the scribe to bring out the Book of the Law of Moses, which the Lord had commanded for Israel. So on the first day of the seventh month Ezra the Priest brought the Law before the assembly, which was made up of men and women and all who were able to understand. He read it aloud from daybreak till noon as he faced the square before the Water gate in the presence of the men, women and others who could understand. And all the people listened attentively.”
Wessie encouraged the church to get together and read the word.

Psalm 119:18 “Open my eyes that I may see wonderful things in your law.”

Jeremiah 15:16 “When your words came, I ate them; they were my joy and my hearts delight, for I bear your name, O Lord God Almighty.” Jeremiah said the word brings joy to his heart. He understands the value of the word.

1 Thessalonians 2:13 “And we also thank God continually because, when you received the word of God, which you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men, but as it actually is, the word of God, which is at work in you who believe.” Paul is writing to the believers in Thessalonica saying that he is so happy that they received the word of god. God has preserved the word for you and me – to study and know him. It is a precious book.

Hebrews 4:12 “For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.” The word of God is powerful. It brings light to the soul. If this is what the Bible says about the Bible, then how important it should be for you and me.

How desperate am I for God? How much attention am I giving to the word?
